METASHIELDTOUGH coating offers advanced surface protection to enhance the durability, lifespan, and appearance of polymer-based materials

While polymer-based products such as polycarbonate and acrylic are very strong, they have very soft surfaces which are very easily abraded.  The MetaShieldTOUGH coating offers a robust and durable solution to the multiple industries that suffer from replacing key items due to abrasion and overall degradation.  Since MetaShieldTOUGH is primarily made of silica (the same material used for glass) it shares many of the properties of glass, without the deficiencies of oil/plastic based products (See technology page for more information)

For example, acrylic is used because of its flexibility, light weight, and easy formability.  However, acrylic is very sensitive to abrasion due to its soft surface properties.  Erosion from particles (e.g. sand), water, chemicals, and general abrasion limits acrylic’s more widespread use and long term effectiveness.

While some plastics may be transparent, glass, which is much heavier and more expensive, remains the material of choice in areas such as transportation, mobile displays, and architecture.  While plastics offer several excellent properties such as light weight, formability, and low cost, plastic surfaces are not as hard or abrasion resistant as glass or steel surfaces.

MetaShieldTOUGH would be useful on a variety of plastic substrates including polycarbonate, acrylic, nylon, cellulose triacetate, PET, PVC, PE, PP and PVP, among others, and could pave the way for redesign in many areas and lead to a new class of transparent products that have strong mechanical characteristics, such as tensile strength, while being highly resistance to abrasion and weather conditions.
