Transparent thin-film coating to boost the efficiency of SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAICS

On average, 10% of the sunlight that enters a solar cell bounces around inside of the cell and eventually escapes.  MetaShield PV’s innovative strong forward scattering technology keeps a portion of that light from escaping, thus boosting overall efficiency.  This “light trapping” is achieved using special nanoparticles embedded in the base MetaShield formula.

The company was recently awarded a grant by the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative (USTAR), based on its success with short circuit current and photo-conversion efficiency enhancement in triple junction solar cells based on GaInP/GaInAs/Ge absorber layers.  The formula is easily spray coated directly on top of the existing anti-reflective coating, and dries quickly at room temperature.  Recent tests have demonstrated a 1.2% absolute efficiency increase, and short circuit current density (JSC) increase of 4.85%.

Adaptation of the formula is currently underway for crystalline silicon cells,
 which currently comprise nearly 90% of the $90+ billion market for solar PV.  As the sources of fossils fuels like natural oil and coal are depleting, the solar industry is growing rapidly.  At present, the U.S. has more than 25 gigawatts of installed photovoltaic capacity and generates about 0.73% of total U.S. electricity.  MetaShield PV technology can produce more power with less BOS which directly benefits EBITDA and can push countless marginal PV projects over the line to make the numbers work.
